Tagging Inventory for RMPro
RMPro includes an extensively customizable tag design module where you can create your own tags for virtually any size label, showing what information you want, where you want it, and in whatever format you wish. This can include a barcode, multiple prices, encoded cost, vendor abbreviation, vendor import number, company logo, and many more details about each item. They can be printed on either a single label off of a roll, or on a sheet of labels, such as the Avery templates.

This means that RMPro can also print tags onto a designated label printer. You can use almost any label printer, so long as it’s compatible with the latest versions of Windows (XP and above). If you can print to the label printer from within Microsoft Word, then you can print to it from RMPro.

Since you can print the barcode on the tags, you can also use almost any type of barcode scanner to read those barcodes. RMPro has many places where you can use a barcode scanner to load items, or example, listing items in the inventory inquiry, entering items to sell in the point of sale, recording items to return to the vendor, marking items as received from the vendor, and more.

Recommended equipment
We have some recommendations on equipment you can purchase, including the label printer, barcode scanner, labels, and hanging tags. We use this equipment in our own store, so we know it is efficient.

Label Printers

There are two types of label printers: “Direct Thermal” (DT) and “Thermal Transfer” (TT). Direct Thermal means that it uses a special type of label which is heat sensitive, and it does not require any type of ink, toner, or ribbon to be able to print. Thermal Transfer requires a special type of ribbon in addition to the labels. Direct Thermal printers become more efficient, because you don’t need to buy  an additional ribbon; it’s easier to load labels into the printer, and the quality is much better. Thermal Transfer printers can print to almost any type of label, but becomes a hassle when you need to load the ribbon.
Therefore, the specific model of label printer we recommend is the Cognitive CI 4” DT (CID4-1000). This printer is very easy to use, high quality, and extremely fast. You can change the roll of labels in less than 1 minute. Being a Direct Thermal printer, it does not require any ink, toner, or ribbon to be able to print. The only exception is that you need aspecial type of label which is meant for Direct Thermal printers, which is widely available
from a number of suppliers.

We use rolls of 2” x 4” labels (4” wide) but this printer can support other various sizes, so long as it fits within the 4” range. These rolls come with between 1,000 and 2,000 labels per roll. The material  is durable, and sticks much stronger than the Avery labels.

Barcode Scanners

There are two general types of barcode scanners: “Direct Input” and “Batch” scanners. Some  companies may have different terms for these, but still hold the same concept. Direct Input means that when you scan a barcode, the information is immediately sent to the computer (and to RMPro)  for that item. Batch Scanners means that you scan a group (or batch) of barcodes, and the  information is stored in the scanner’s memory until you load it into the computer (and to RMPro). Each method has its advantages and disadvantages.

Direct Input scanners are ideal for entering items on a basic invoice, or in general inputting items  directly into a list within RMPro. These can be either wired or wireless, but strongly recommended to be wireless, as it has many obvious advantages.

Batch Scanners are ideal for entering large groups of items, especially when they have some sort of similarity. In other words, you may want to get a listing of all the items on your 9X12 rug rack. It is the type of scanner you would need to perform a Physical Inventory.
We use a specific model of scanner which supports both of such  methods; it is a Motorola MT-2070 scanner. There are a number of  different options to choose from for this model, but you only need  certain features. A) Bluetooth is optional, you may or may not need this; B) Make sure you get a Cradle with a USB Cable; C) Get the Laser, not the Imager. This scanner is capable of extensive programming and customization – as it comes with Microsoft Windows CE. We provide you the tools necessary to get this model working with RMPro.

Suppliers

For all Point-of-Sale related equipment, we always go to POSGuys. This company is popular  because they fully support everything they sell. Instead of contacting support for Cognitive or Motorola, you can get support directly from them for all your POS equipment – so long as it was purchased from them. As for any type of labeling or tagging supplies, we recommend Ronmar Group.
