Client Computers:
A Client Computer is any computer which is meant to be running RMPro. These computers can have any version of Microsoft Windows, XP and higher. All client computers must have the ability to connect to the Database Server, whether in the same physical network, or through a virtual private network.
Minimum Requirements:
- Processor: Any new processor
- Memory: 2GB or Higher
- Hard Disk: 50GB or Higher
- Operating System: Windows XP or Higher, 32bit or 64bit
Recommended Purchase:
- Dell Vostro 230s Slim Tower Desktop
Database Server Computer:
Depending on the size of your company, you may need to designate one computer as your database server. If you have a small company, it won’t be necessary to purchase a designated server computer, but instead use one of your standard client computers to host the database. If you have a single user license or one computer only then your computer will be considered the server for RMPro. Otherwise, if you have a larger company, you will need a larger capacity server to handle the activity.
The Database Server is the one and only computer designated to host the database for RMPro. RMPro comes with a free edition of Microsoft MSDE 2000 which is compatible with all Windows operating systems from XP up, both 32 and 64 bit, in exception of Windows Server 2008. If your database server has Windows Server 2008, you will need to download and install the Express edition of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, because MSDE 2000 cannot be installed on Server 2008. Although possible, it is not recommended to use a client computer as the database server.
Minimum Requirements:
- Processor: Any Dual Core or Higher
- Memory: 4GB or Higher
- Hard Disk: 150 GB or Higher
- Operating System: Windows Server 2008 or Higher, 32bit or 64bit
Recommended Purchase:
- Dell PowerEdge T110
Internet Connection:
If for any reason you would like to connect a computer at one location to the database server at another location, there is some networking you will have to configure. If your locations are already connected with a ‘Virtual Private Network’ (or VPN), you won’t need to do anything further. Otherwise, you need to create this network connection between the locations by following the instructions below.
Each and every location which will be connecting to the server will need its own ‘Static IP Address’, available from your Internet Service Provider. This includes the location where your database server is hosted. The static IP addresses allow your locations to all have a unique IP address which never changes.
The main firewall at the server’s location needs to be configured to allow SQL Server connections (through port 1433) from only the static IP’s of your other locations. That is, you need to open your firewall to allow only those locations to connect to your server, and no other connections will be allowed.
This router will also need a ‘NAT Policy’ which redirects any incoming connection to this static IP address to your database server. This type of configuration is best left up to someone who knows networking.
Minimum Requirements:
- DSL Broadband or Higher
Recommended Bandwidth:
- 10 MB/S Download, 10 MB/S Upload (Server Location)
- 5 MB/S Download, 5 MB/S Upload (All Other Locations)
Microsoft SQL Server:
Although RMPro comes with a free edition of Microsoft MSDE 2000, you may wish to upgrade your database server to any later version of SQL you wish. Considering the many editions of SQL available, you need to choose carefully depending on the size of your business. This isn’t usually necessary unless you have at least 3 or more locations connecting to the same server, or if you have at least 10 or more client computers concurrently using the SQL server.
If you choose to implement our eCommerce solution, this will be a mandatory requirement. If this is the case, we recommend Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition. Do not use the free Express edition of SQL if you have our eCommerce solution, because it lacks the required functionality.
Power Management:
To protect your database server, you may wish to purchase a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) in case you lose power. If you are using the eCommerce integration, this will be a mandatory requirement. If the power to the server is cut, this UPS must take over and keep the server alive for as long as possible.
Recommended Purchase:
- CyberPower 1500 VA - Rack mountable
- LCD Display - Surge Rating: 1840 Joules
- Battery Run Time: 6 Minutes @ Full Load
- Recharge Time: 8 Hours
